On 27 and 28 September, the Dutch Consulate in Istanbul organized a Dutch Design Session specified to cycle lane ideas.
On behalf of the Dutch Cycling Embassy, Cecile van der Linden and Bas Hendriksen (both senior advisors at the Loendersloot Groep) were guests together with employees of the various authorities and representatives of stakeholders such as local bicycle associations, bicycle rental companies and bicycle couriers. For two days, they were working together on a design for a bicycle connection between the port of Galata and a university area and were presented with a few presentations, including a presentation by Bas Hendriksen with an introduction to the Dutch cycling infrastructure, why we cycle so much and how that process has been going on for the past 45 years. In the Netherlands too, the bicycle was in jeopardy during the 1970’s. In Turkey, the first steps have been taken with the car-free shopping streets and investments in a good public transport system. Now it comes down to giving the bike a good, safe and comfortable place.
